Pawhuska '99
the
  TRUE LEGENDS OF WESTERN SWING
         THE TEXAS PLAYBOYS

It just doesn't get any better than this?

The cast begins with fiddle GREAT! Curly Lewis one of the most respected and sought after fiddleman in the biz, having worked with Bob and Johnny Lee. He was an absolutely phenominal singer but sadly lost his voice. GREAT TALENT! Please listen to the album,
Pawhuska LIVE.  This album proves that and is probably the last recording made with him singing.

Paired with fiddleman, Bobbie Boatright who did not work with the King of Western Swing the two blend their harmonies in perfect timing. Bobbie worked with Johnny Patterson when Carl Johnson owned the name in the late 60's. He also worked with Leon McAuliffe in the concert series  "For the Last Time" initiated by Merle Haggard's album production.

An undeniable legend in Western Swing is Glynn Duncan, the baby brother to Bob's side kick and champion of Bob's success from the beginning with the LIghtcrust Doughboys, Tommy Duncan. When Tommy left the band in the 50's, Glynn joined the band singing and playing bass. Not taking his big brother's place but craving his own niche in history as a Texas Playboys.

The ONLY FEMALE Texas Playboy is Louise Rowe and she is the only woman to have that distinction. Women sang in the band as she did but she is the only female musician to have worked with the legend and YOU have to be a musician to be a TEXAS PLAYBOY. Louise played bass and sang with the band in the late 40's. I (Kelli Grant) had the good fortune to work with Louise, sing & play piano in an all girl band she put together to perform at the San Marcos Texas Swing Hall of Fame ceremony. I filled in for her daughter who was sick. Others in the band: Chris O'Connell - guitar & Mary Ann Price - vocals (formerly  with Asleep at the Wheel) They did a commercial for Southwest Airlines. Erkel & Merthel or something like that? Hahaha.
Mary Ann and I were nominated for Female Artisit of the Year - AWA. I won ... to my surprise and amazement?

The lineup continues with the highly charismatic,Bobby Koefer, steel Guitar. Bobby fronts the band on this show bringing humor along with his superb musicial genuis. NO ONE and I mean NO ONE played like Bobby and no one ever will. He was the greatest!

Clarence Cagle - Piano, Worked for Johhny Lee Wills and Bob in the 40's. Clarence really had his own style. He was featured on one of Bob's albums on the song, Boogie Woogie Highball which is luckily heard on this album.

SPECIAL GUEST:

Mike Bennett - Trumpet: Casey had gotten a call from MIke Bennett who lived in Oklahoma City expressing his desire to play with The Texas Playboy and play he did. There's no sheet music. As Bob once said, "you hear in your head, feel it in your heart, to be able play it." It quite obvious thta MIke plays with his heart. I worked 2 concerts with "Doc" Severinsen (Tonight Show) ... Mike is the absolute BEST I HAVE EVER HEARD!

TEXAS DRUMMER BOY - JOHNNY CUVIELO Worked for Bob in the 40's and had this wonderful drum featured hit with the Playboys.
Stand BACK. He's coming on strong. He's 80 years old, I think? But still plays.

CLIFF BRUNER - Fiddle Cliff made his own mark in the industry but started off with Milton Brown as one of the Brownies. He lived outside of Houston and could hear a mexican band melody being carried thru the airwaves into in his bedroom as he lay trying to sleep. The melody became embedded in his head. According to what he told me, Kelli Grant he rented a motel room and recorded the song on to a wax disc. The unique action of plucking the violin strings had NOT been done before. But it capture the audience and industry and he became a legend.
